Capital Area Spay & Neuter Center
The
Washington Humane Society (WHS) has committed its staff and resources
to solving the overwhelming problem of pet overpopulation and has

Vaccine
Requirements
Cats
Due
to the high incidence of potentially fatal Feline Distemper in
the Greater Washington Area, the National Capital Area Spay &
Neuter Center currently requires all cats coming
to the Center be current on Feline Distemper vaccination (FVRCP)
Kittens
4-6 months old: Record of at least 2 FVRCP vaccines given
3-4 weeks apart. To provide the best protection, the vaccine series
needs to have been completed at least 2-weeks prior to the surgical
appointment
Cats 6-months and Up: Record of at least 1 previous
(and current) FVRCP is sufficiant. To provide the best protection,
recent vaccinations must have been administered at least 2-weeks
prior to the surgical appointment.
If
you need to get your kitten or cat current on FVRCP prior to surgery,
please see below for information on our walk-in, low-cost vaccination
clinics.
Dogs
There are currently no vaccine requirements for dogs, but due
to the very nature of our Center caring for animals from around
the region it is strongly advised that all dogs be current on
Canine Distemper (DHPP) prior to coming to the Center for surgery.
Please see below for information on our walk-in, low-cost
vaccination clinics.

What
is the WHS National Capital Area Spay & Neuter Center?
Low-Cost
and High-Quality: Can they go hand-in-hand?
The National Capital
Area Spay & Neuter Center is a non profit, high volume, high
quality veterinary clinic performing low cost spays and neuters
for cats and dogs. Whereas a traditional veterinary hospital must
be prepared to provide a wide variety of services each day, a specialized
spay/neuter clinic can focus its efforts entirely on perfecting
and streamlining only one task: sterilization (although we also
provide vaccinations and other, basic ancillary treatments). The
need for extraordinary efficiency in every aspect of a successful
high-volume clinic means employing a motivated staff that's willing
to work as a team, communicates very well, and has a dedication
to the purpose of the clinic; combating pet overpopulation and reducing
the numbers of animals born into homelessness or surrendered to
area shelters. The National Capital Area Spay & Neuter Center
employs such a talented and dedicated team!
The
National Capital Area Spay & Neuter Center medical team expects
excellence from themselves and strives to provide the very best
care with each surgery performed. Our
staff works daily with the passion of ending the cycle of pet overpopulation
and companion animal’s homelessness. Despite the emphasis
on speed, the medical team at the National Capital Area Spay &
Neuter Center recognizes the vital importance of providing thorough
and safe care. Speed may be vital but safety is imperative. Our
veterinarians are licensed and accredited. Our assistants and technicians
are dedicated professionals. We handle many surgeries each day but
will not sacrifice quality nor the proper care and attention that
your dog or cat requires and deserves. While we are a high volume
clinic, we treat each animal as if they were one of ours.
High-Volume
Spay/Neuter Clinics Impact Pet Overpopulation
High-volume spay/neuter clinics play an important role in reducing
pet overpopulation in the communities they serve. Although it's
difficult to quantify the exact impact these clinics have made on
dog and cat overpopulation, the sheer volume of animals these clinics
have prevented from reproducing has undoubtedly had a tremendous
effect on the pet overpopulation crisis. The National Capital Area
Spay & Neuter Center partners with regional animal shelters
to support them in their mission to reach 100% pre-adoption spay/neuter
for all of their shelter animals heading into forever homes.
Every
animal deserves to be wanted
Sadly thousands of animals are born each year in our area only to
end up at already crowded shelters or abandoned on the streets.
Sterilization is the only method available to end animal overpopulation.
Please help us end the overpopulation problem by supporting the
work of our WHS National Capital Area Spay & Neuter Center.
A gift of $45 will prevent one cat from adding to the thousands
of strays and ferals in our community. $100 will end the cycle of
backyard breeding for one dog. Please visit our donations
page to help us move forward in our mission to help stem the tide
of homeless animals! Together we will make a difference!
Regional
Participation is the Solution
In response to the overwhelming agreement about the area’s
need for affordable sterilization, the Washington Humane Society
expanded its surgical facility to not only support our own shelter
animals and animals owned by the general public but to also partner
with area groups also in need of support with their own localized
spay/neuter initiatives. Area shelters now utilizing our services
include:
Alexandria Animal Rescue League
Arlington Animal Rescue League
Fairfax County Animal Shelter
Prince Georges County Animal Shelter and SPCA
Prince William County SPCA
and many other rescue groups are now using our National Capital
Area Spay & Neuter Center to reach their goal of 100% pre-adoption
sterilization.
If you work with a local animal shelter or rescue group, please
contact Director Bridget Speiser at Bspeiser@washhumane.org,
or by calling 202-88-ALTER, (ext 102) for additional details about
how you can get involved.
