Washington Humane Society Humane Law Enforcement Officer Pulls Man from Burning Vehicle Seconds Before it Explodes

Washington, DC– Known for his bravery in rescuing the abused and neglected animals of DC, Washington Humane Society Humane Law Enforcement Officer Chris Schindler has always been admired for his commitment to making a difference in our city. While en route transporting a dog for the Washington Humane Society on the evening of July 25th, just as rush hour was about to begin, a white van traveling down New Hampshire Avenue a few cars ahead of Officer Schindler crashed into a tree and burst into flames.

The driver, a middle-aged man was trapped inside of the white van with no way to get out. As other cars passed by ignoring the accident without stopping to help, Officer Schindler pulled his Washington Humane Society van to the side of the road and rushed to help the man.

The doors of the white van were smashed in, not able to open, and the man was tangled in his seatbelt, struggling to break free. In a matter of seconds Officer Schindler was able to reach inside, free the man from the seatbelt; then pull the man out through the small front driver’s side window of the van, feet first. At that moment another good citizen stopped and helped Officer Schindler carry the man away from the van. As the two carried the man to safety, the van exploded behind them.

Officer Schindler waited with the injured man until the fire department and police arrived on the scene. True to his humble character, Officer Schindler carried on with his duties, working late into the night without ever mentioning his heroic actions.
