Directions to the D.C. Animal Shelter

From Downtown and NW DC
Take Massachusetts Avenue to Mount Vernon Square (between 9th and 7th Streets). Go straight down north side of Mount Vernon Square to 7th Street. You will now be facing down New York Avenue--just stay on it about 8 minutes to the shelter, which is on the right at 1201 New York Ave, NE. (Useful landmark: Shelter is at the light right after the only overpass you will go under.)

From Capitol Hill and SE and SW DC
Take 6th Street (SE/NE) to Florida Ave., NE; cross Florida Avenue. Continue straight ahead for .55 mile, staying to the right. At next light, take middle road of three-way split, which goes down a short hill and enters New York Avenue right at the shelter.

From NE DC, e.g., the Brookland area
Take North Capitol Street to New York Avenue. Go left on New York Avenue and continue straight ahead to the shelter, which is on your right at 1201 New York Ave. (Useful landmark: Shelter is at the light right after the only overpass you will go under.)

From Northern Virginia via 14th Street Bridge
On bridge, get in 2nd lane from right and follow all signs to 395, which will put you on Southwest Freeway. On Freeway, stay in same lane and continue to follow 395 signs. Lane veers off to right and takes you under three tunnels, including an exit ramp tunnel. In the 2nd tunnel, stay in 2nd lane from the left and do not leave this lane. As you exit the third tunnel, 395 will deadend at New York Avenue. Turn right onto New York Ave and continue straight ahead to the shelter, which is on your right at 1201 New York Ave. (Useful landmark: Shelter is at the light right after the only overpass you will go under.)

From Maryland
Take the beltway to the Baltimore-Washington Parkway or U.S. 50; If using the Parkway, stay on the right as you approach the merger with Route 50. Once you are on route 50, use any convenient lane. Route 50 becomes New York Ave. as you enter Washington. About 1 mile after the first light (New York and Bladensburg Road), you will pass the shelter (1201 New York Avenue) on your left. There is a solid median at this point, so continue up New York Ave. to the third light beyond the shelter, counting the light right at the shelter as No. 1. This third light has a left turn arrow. Turn around in the parking lots to your left and come down New York Ave. to the shelter.
