Adopt a Dog

As the only open-access shelters in Washington, DC the Washington Humane Society cares for thousands of animals a year. With the help of our volunteer Foster Parents the Washington Humane Society is moving full-steam ahead with the five-year Good Home Guarantee Plan that promises a home to every adoptable animal entering our shelters by 2010.

In our Foster Program, Washington Humane Society shelter animals live with volunteer foster parents until they find permanent homes. All the same adoption policies apply to foster adoptions as to adoption through the shelter. There are, however, some advantages. You may find that a foster home is more convenient to your neighborhood. More importantly, you get a chance to speak directly with the foster parent who has been living with the animal you are considering. He or she can give you a great deal of insight into the behavior of your prospective pet.

Are you interested in becoming a dog or cat foster parent for the Washington Humane Society? Please visit our Foster Program page for more information or contact Foster and Rescue Coordinator Kate Zapf (202) 723-5730 (ext. 149) or kzapf@washhumane.org

venus.jpg

Venus is a sweet, active Pointer mix who came to us because her owner had too many animals. At almost 2 years old, this girl has a lot of potential with an owner who will give her the training, boundaries, and exercise she needs. Venus is currently in a training program, working on basic obedience and manners. If you agree to continue her education, she agrees to be a lively, loyal companion!

nino.jpg

Nino is a super adorable 4 month old Rottweiler who was abandoned in an apartment building in the 700 block of 13th Street SE . Nino is a laidback, sweet boy who loves being petted, likes to give kisses (once he warms up to you!) and gets along great with other dogs. Simply due to his age we'd prefer his new home have only adults or older children, and that his new owners have some familiarity with his breed. Nino will be about 70lbs when full grown. Come meet this handsome boy today!

iris.jpg

Iris is a 6 3/4 year old mixed shepherd (or Malinois) who was placed by WHS in 2004 but returned by her adopters this year when they had children. She appears to be uncomfortable when in close contact with children, but is fine with them at a distance, so she should be adopted by an adult household, preferably without cats. Iris is an extremely loving, loyal dog and is very good on walks and meeting new people. She may have some initial separation anxiety, but will settle down in a week or two, and is then a very easy dog to have around the house. She is calm and well-behaved and just loves to relax at home with her people. She would probably enjoy being an only dog, but lived peacefully with another dog in her former home. She needs only moderate exercise and loves toys. If you have a quiet household with a regular routine and just want a nice companion dog, Iris would be a great dog for you. (Iris' foster parents will be out of town from May 15-26, so please call before or after then.)

danny2.jpg
danny.jpg

Danny is a 2yr old tricolor small miniature poodle who was rescued from the Virginia Puppy Mill that was raided late in 2007. When Danny came to me he had never been handled or given time out of a cage. He couldn’t go up or down stairs and didn’t know how to play or interact with humans or animals. Danny now goes up and down stairs and though he is hesitant, he is becoming more trusting each day. When he came to me he was so thin that his ribs stuck out but now he is a little on the heavy side because he is getting good food and lots of love. Because he is a special needs dog and will always have some quirks, he should go to a home where he will be given extra love and gentle handling by someone who is familiar with or dealt with his type of problems.

winnie.jpg

Winnie is a very sweet and smart pup - Boxer/Shepard mix . She is a skinny 40lbs now and will like grow to about 75/80lbs. She is totally crate trained and waltzes right in when asked, no complaints! She is nearly house trained too, and at only 6 months old, she is the perfect pup. She came in as a stray, but it is obvious that she has had some training, but it is clear that this was by negative reinforcement. She knows how to sit and responds to even a quiet no. However, she will continue to need lots of positive reinforcement to keep her on the right track. She loves to be told she is a "good girl". Because of her breed mix she requires lots of play-time and time to release her energy. She plays well by herself and with other dogs, but needs to be reminded to play gently. She will do fine as a single dog but could also benefit from a dog brother or sister. Like most puppies, Winnie loves squeaker toys and balls (she is already becoming quite the retriever). Winnie has only been with us for a short time but it obvious that she loves people and strives to make us happy. She is a comical pup that is sure to make you smile! Call or email me today to set up some play-time, I promise you will not want to leave.

collins.jpg

Colllins is a non stop tail wagger and all around good guy. He's 1 year, medium sized at 45 pounds, potty trained and he sits on command. He's also good with cats. He absolutely LOVES to play fetch with balls and to go on long walks. But he's not too active and is content to chew on a bone or laze around inside the house. (He does have a tendancy to haul sneakers around--but so far, so good--he hasn't chewed any up!) Clearly, someone took good care of this gorgeous guy, but somehow he got lost and was picked up as a stray at the Half Street car inspection center.
