Adopt a Cat

As the only open-access shelters in Washington, DC the Washington Humane Society cares for thousands of animals a year. With the help of our volunteer Foster Parents the Washington Humane Society is moving full-steam ahead with the five-year Good Home Guarantee Plan that promises a home to every adoptable animal entering our shelters by 2010.

In our Foster Program, Washington Humane Society shelter animals live with volunteer foster parents until they find permanent homes. All the same adoption policies apply to foster adoptions as to adoption through the shelter. There are, however, some advantages. You may find that a foster home is more convenient to your neighborhood. More importantly, you get a chance to speak directly with the foster parent who has been living with the animal you are considering. He or she can give you a great deal of insight into the behavior of your prospective pet.

Are you interested in becoming a dog or cat foster parent for the Washington Humane Society? Please visit our Foster Program page for more information or contact Foster and Rescue Coordinator Kate Zapf 202-723-5730 (ext. 149) or kzapf@washhumane.org

Cats Available in Foster Homes as of Tuesday, May 13, 2008

cordelia.jpg

Cordelia is a sweet 2 year old girl. She is very playful and kitten-like and loves to play hide-and-seek. She is currently living well in her foster home with other cats, including a senior feline. She also is used to seeing the resident canine, and seems ok with that (though they haven't played together). Cordelia came to the shelter with 2 nursing kittens, who both found homes. She now likes to spend her days lying in the sun or sitting next to you on the sofa. Will you give Cordelia the loving home she needs so she can let her silly-girl personality shine?

jolly.jpg
jolly2.jpg

Jolly is a gorgeous 3 year old medium haired Torti girl. She adores dogs and likes cats who are younger than she is (she loves kitten chasing games!). She is not aggressive and won't start fights in her multi cat foster home. Her best friend, though, is her foster Mom's large gentle Great Dane and thus she is sometimes more doglike in her actions than other cats. She loves to sit with her foster family but does not always enjoy alot of petting and is definately not a lap cat nor would she be good with small children. Her ideal home would be a quieter adult home with a dog and another cat or two where her humans could slowly teach her to be more accepting of alot of petting and loving.

bruce.jpg

Bruce is a one year-old, furry bundle of fun! His former owners moved and left him behind to fend for himself. Fortunately he was lucky enough to end up with us, and he's now in a foster home reacquainting himself with the finer things in life like long naps in the sun, catnip toys and a good belly rub. Bruce is very very playful and must be an only cat, but would probably do well with a dog!

sheila.jpg

Sheila is affectionate and loves being petted and rubbed and she just sits in your lap and purrs while soaking up all the attention you give her. She was brought into the shelter with her five white kittens because her owner was not able to care for them all. After raising her kittens and seeing them adopted to happy homes, Sheila is now ready to be the center of attention! This lovely two-year-old girl promises to be your loyal companion in exchange for your love and attention!

jewel.jpg

Jewel Hello! My name is Jewel because of my beautiful emerald eyes. Everyone thinks I’m about 2 years old. My foster family found me in the alley and thought I was just too nice to leave out in the cold. They think I’m the perfect house cat. I’m pretty mellow and don’t need room to run around. I don’t jump on anything higher than the bed or scratch anything I shouldn’t. I have a good appetite (LOOVE the dry food), use the litterbox faithfully and don’t get anxious when left alone. I can be playful when you want to or content to curl up quietly next to you. My fur is so soft and smooth that you’ll love to pet me. I was even good during my visit to the vet! My foster family would love to keep me, but I just can’t tolerate the other three cats here. If you have a small place with room for only one cat, I’m your puurfect low-maintenance choice!

tiny.jpg

Tiny is a four month old boy who came into the shelter with his mother Sheila and his four siblings. His siblings have been adopted, and now he's looking for his chance at a happy home! He is playful and enthusiastic just like a kitten should be, but also loves to curl up after playtime for a cuddle and a long nap.

maxie.jpg

Maxie Hi! My name is Maxie and if you are ready for a new best friend, I am ready to meet you. I just had my first birthday and was spoiled by my feline brothers and sisters. I have the most gorgeous orange eyes you will ever see on a kitty and the softest fur. My days involve rolling in a little bit of catnip, chasing my sister Bumblebee around, drinking ouf of my pet fountain and cuddling in my kitty treehouse. At night, I curl up with my foster mom and ensure each night I sleep with her. I love other female felines but don't enjoy male felines as much. I could be in a home by myself or with another female kitty. I am a little shy at first but warm up to you very quickly.

wonton.jpg

Emmy (formerly Wonton) is a wonderful 3 year old petite orange and white girl. Extremely social, she greets her visitors by touching her nose to theirs and loves to sit in her foster mom and dad's laps. Emmy is a very interactive girl, yet she also has an independent side and will do her own thing. She was found as a stray, but she was clearly someone's cat as she is very affectionate and enjoys human companionship. She loves to be brushed and to purr contentedly on a lap. She enjoys playing with catnip toys and a feather and string, but really, this girl's first love is being loved!

cookiesfoster.jpg

Cookies is a 2-year-old female whose previous family thought she was too energetic and playful. Cats need exercise too, and Cookies would love a home with someone who will get her lots of toys, especially feather wands and laser pointers so she play, prance, and pounce with her new family!

trixie.jpg
trixie2.jpg

Trixie is a lovely one and a half year old female who was brought to us by someone who had too many cats. She came in with a young kitten who has since been adopted, so now she is in a foster home waiting to find her permanent place! Trixie is a sweet girl who adores getting her chin scratched and will follow you around the house, just in case you need any "help"! She will be a true friend and a loyal companion in her new home.

greta.jpg

Greta and Butterfly Meet Greta and her young daughter, Butterfly! These two beauties are looking for a loving home to call their own. Greta is about a year old, very affectionate, likes people, and loves to have her tummy rubbed. She is not quite as thrilled with other felines or canines. Greta did a spectacular job raising Butterfly who was born in mid-February. Butterfly is an adorable, playful little kitten, a little ball of energy who keeps her mom busy watching her. They both get along with kids and will make a perfect addition to a loving home.

zach.jpg

Zach My name is Zach and I am one cool cat. Somehow I managed to be a dog in a cat's body. Check out my soft-as-silk gray fur and my stunning green eyes. I am all gray except a tiny white spot on my belly. Did I mention that you can pet my belly? That is one of my favorite things. I know my name and run to my foster mom when she calls me. I sleep with her every night and insist that I curl up under the covers. I love any toy and can play for hours. And, tv time is quite fun and I could be considered a couch potato. I know how to dance in the air for the feather toy. I also talk and know my ABC's. I get along with other cats and would also do well as an only cat. I just had my third birthday but still act like a kitten.

izzy.jpg

Izzy My name is Izzy and I just turned one year old. I am really the cutest balck and white tuxedo cat you will ever meet. I love to play hide-and-go-seek and jump out at my feline brother and sisters. We chase each other around and have a blast. I am a good climber and climb the cat treet multiple times every day. I also enjoy being carried around and having my chin scratched and my belly rubbed. My favorite spot is sunning myself in the chair by the bay window and I sleep on my back with my paws in the air. I would love to be in a home with other kitties.

angel.jpg

Angel My name is Angel and I am an 8-month old dilute tortie long hair. I look darker in my picture but that is only the lighting. I blinked when my foster mom took my picture so you can't see my beautiful eyes. I am a tiny 8-month old and my mom thinks I am mixed with some norweigan forest cat. I would do well in a house either by myself or with other kitties. I chase the laser constantly and bring my catnip toys and play with them in the bathtub. I play with the water in the kitty water fountain and like to sip the water when my mom brushes her teeth. My favorite sleeping spot is warm towels and under the comforter. My new thing is watching kitty DVD and I sit on the coffee table and try to swat the birds and squirrels on the tv.

teddy&punky2.jpg
teddy&punky.jpg

Teddy (left)  and  Punky()(right) act like little monkeys when they bounce around the house. They LOVE to play and chase each other around, and are the goofiest pair you'll ever meet. When they get tired it's time to snuggle up on the couch with their foster mom. They're very respectful of the two older cats in the home and are used to being around a large dog. Punky will roll onto her back and wrestle with the dog who's head is twice her size! Teddy really lives up to his name since he's the little teddy bear of the two, generally pretty quiet and always ready for some lap time. It takes nothing to get his little motor rumbling. They are full of joy and spunk, and have learned all the important indoor kitty habits. Teddy and Punky have a fantastic time together, so they will only be adopted out as a pair. They will bring so much joy and love to someone's life.
